Echoes of Destruction: The Tragic Fall of the Jaredite Civilization

SALT LAKE CITY (March 8, 2024) — Millions of people died in battle, leading to the destruction of the Jaredite people.

This has been an ongoing war between Coriantumr and Shiz. Because of the hatred built up, they yielded to the natural man, which led to millions of men, women, and children to their deaths. Four years prior, both sides worked relentlessly to gather a large enough number to defeat the other.

“Pursuant to this decree concerning the land of America, the Jaredites were swept off in the manner we have reviewed because, rebelling against the laws of Jesus Christ—the God of the land—they “ripened in iniquity.” Marion G. Romney, the second counselor in the First Presidency, recounts.

Because of the rebellious acts of the Jaredite people, the land was no longer protected by God. Coriantumr “remember[ed] the words which had been spoken by the mouth of all the prophets,” yet it was not enough to save his people. “I desire that you would not come again to battle, but that you would take the kingdom, and spare the lives of the people.” Coriantumr begged his enemy to no avail.

The story of the Jaredites begins with the biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel, where the Jaredites were among those whose language was confounded. The brother of Jared, a righteous man, pleaded with God to spare his family and friends from the scattering and confusion at the tower. In response, God led the Jaredites, under the leadership of the brother of Jared, to the Americas.

The war stemmed from political power struggles, spiritual decline, and divine judgment. Both leaders were vying for control of Jaredite society, while the moral decay of God’s commandments contributed to the conflict’s escalation.

The war symbolizes the consequences of disobedience and serves as a warning of the destructive outcomes of spiritual and moral decay. “Repent all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me, and believe in my gospel, and be baptized in my name; for he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned; and signs shall follow them that believe in my name.”
