Ethics serve as our moral compass as we strive to navigate the world of written communication. As writers, we must guide with honesty, fairness, and respect. What does it truly mean to have ethics in writing?

To me, ethics in writing means you have committed to creating a space of truthfulness, transparency, and empathy. Readers give you their trust, and using ethics means you treasure that trust and do all in your power to maintain it -- no matter the temptation.

During my time at a previous job, I encountered a troubling situation involving two departing employees. Instead of informing me, their manager, of their decision to leave, they took it upon themselves to pilfer our clientele list. Unfortunately, by the time we discovered the theft, the damage had been done. These individuals proceeded to pester our clients incessantly, leaving us to pick up the pieces and mend the fractured trust they had shattered.

Although this is not an example of ethics in writing, I do believe it goes both ways. Ethics is important in both in-person interaction and writing.
