God Speaks to Us in Our Own Language

I love the scripture in Doctrine & Covenants 1:24. It says, "Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language, that they might come to understanding". This teaches us that God speaks to us individually and in the way we understand.

What does this teach us about God?

There are a few things we understand about the nature of God while reading this verse:

We learn that He is loving. He knows each one of us and our individual needs. He is an individual God. "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee..." Jeremiah 1:5

We learn that He knows our needs perfectly. One example in scripture is when Joseph Smith prayed to ask God which church to join. He came down and called him by name. He understood what Joseph needed at that moment. Because God can individually speak to us, that means He also knows and understands our needs. He is the only one who can direct the Spirit to touch our hearts in the way that is best suited to us.

We learn that He can make us strong. By nature, we are weak; by comparison to God, we are even weaker. As we humble ourselves to God and show Him our willing heart, He "make weak things become strong" (Ether 12:27).

Knowing that we have a loving Father in Heaven who understands our own language helps me feel immense peace and hope.
