Deciding which stories are newsworthy is difficult for me to understand. However, I look for a few key things while debating whether to write about a specific topic and if it is newsworthy. Understanding your audience is critical to writing a newsworthy story. Is it something that is happening right now? What is the impact it will have on the audience? And is it a novelty?
Let's first talk about understanding your audience. Like marketing or business strategy, understanding your audience is the only way to gain recognition. If you do not take the time to learn who you want to read your articles, you are wasting your time and will not see the results you hope for. If the story you are writing fits your target audience, write it. The answer is simple if it does not, do not write it.
Another point to understand is the timeliness of the event. Readers expect updated information and read about things happening today. This can be highly challenging for writers, but it is what makes good writers stand out.
If you are writing for the news, having a novelty of a story is going to help draw attention to it. People enjoy hearing about groundbreaking events. If you write about it, you will see success.
These are just a few ways to ensure your next story is newsworthy. Remember to ask yourself if it is different, if it fits your audience, and if it is happening right now.
